D'Arabian Hosts Alex's Lemonade Stand Sunday to Honor Connor Carvajal

The boy, 6, died last year and the Food Network host wanted to continue the fundraising effort launched by her daughters in his memory.

It's been just over a year since little Connor Carvajal died.

The Village Elementary School first grader succumbed to neuroblastoma, a form of cancer, in May 2012, shortly before his 7th birthday.

He will be remembered from 4-7 p.m. Sunday when community resident and Food Network host Melissa d'Arabian hosts the “Coronado Loves Connor Lemonade Stand” in his honor as part of the national Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation fund-raising campaign.

She will be at C Avenue between 6th and 7th streets as the Spreckels Park concert takes place with the Navy Southwest Jazz Band performing.

After her young daughters gave out lemonade in honor of Connor following his death, only asking for donations to benefit cancer charities, d'Arabian decided to get involved in a bigger way.

The local stand, she wrote on Coronado's dedicated alexslemonade.org page, will combine “the celebration of our local hero’s life with my daughters’ mad lemonade-making skills.”

The stand will naturally feature lemonade, but also a favorite snack of Connor's, sugar cookies. The duo can be purchased for $1, but picnic packs featuring some of d'Arabian's popular recipes also will be available, ranging from $10-$29.

Check the fundraising page for the full list of goodies. You have until 9 p.m. Saturday to pre-order the larger packs or specify that they be home delivered. Pre-orders, along with checks written to Alex's Lemonade Stand, can be turned in in a box placed at 919 F Ave.

Alex's Lemonade Stand was inspired by the late Alexandra Scott, who when she was 4 asked her parents to help her sell lemonade to help other kids as her doctors had helped her. Like Connor, she had neuroblastoma.

Her decision spawned a movement, which has raised more than $60 million and now funds 300 pediatric cancer projects. Alex died at 8 in 2004.
