It's supposed to be a sizzling weekend – is there not a better time to take advantage of the Navy opening up its part of the shoreline and racing by the sea?

The Rotary Club will host the 8-mile Low Tide Ride & Stride from Imperial Beach to Coronado at 8 a.m. Sunday. The race is open to runners, walkers and bicyclists, whether going solo or sharing.

The race, organizers say, offers “the hard packed sand at the shoreline for the bicycles and loose sand up the beach for those who really want a workout.”

The event starts at Camp Surf, Seacoast Drive and Carnation Avenue, in IB, and racers make their way up the beach past the normally closed Navy lands and the Hotel del Coronado.

The run ends at Sunset Park in Coronado, near Naval Air Station North Island.

Registration on-site is $40 for adults and $20 for children and teens. Proceeds will benefit veterans programs, including Naval Medical Center San Diego near Balboa Park.

Organizers also have a shuttle available to get to IB for the start. They will leave Sunset Park from 6:15-7:15 a.m. After the race, the shuttles will run until 11 a.m.
