Walgreens Proposal Goes to Planning Commission

The chain wants to take over Orange Avenue spot vacated by Petco.

The Walgreens drugstore chain will present its proposal to the Planning Commission Tuesday for an abandoned retail space on Orange Avenue at 9th Street.

The meeting marks the next step in the review process. . 

The commission meets at 3 p.m. at City Hall.

The architect enlisted by Walgreens met several times with members of the community and appeared before the design commission twice, to try and make the retailer's plans more acceptable to residents. 

They include adding windows framed by arches, a rounded entry and a side wall with plants rising on a trellis to a building that has been occupied by different tenants, including Petco and Bank of America.

The design panel also recommended that the Planning Commission press the drugstore about closing the Orange driveway entrance to improve safety.
