Supervisors Unanimously Support Redistricting Proposal

Supervisor Greg Cox would continue to represent Coronado and the South Bay; two other districts to see more changes under the proposed plan.

The San Diego County Board of Supervisors gave its unanimous support Tuesday to one of three proposed redistricting plans.

The plan labeled "Draft Plan 5-7" was created by a redistricting committee and will cause the biggest changes to areas represented by Supervisors Ron Roberts and Pam Slater-Price.

The district currently represented by Roberts would get a larger part of the downtown district represented by Supervisor Greg Cox and include parts of La Jolla and other coastal areas. Slater-Price would lose La Jolla and gain University City and Mira Mesa.

Other supervisorial districts will change little. Cox would continue to have the South Bay, including Coronado, part of downtown and Point Loma, while Dianne Jacob would represent the East County.

In the North County, Chairman Bill Horn's district would extend from Camp Pendleton and Carlsbad east through his home turf of Valley Center to rural northeast parts of the county.

The committee members, who met 14 times, were tasked with redrawing district boundaries based on 2010 census data. Their proposed plans, for the most part, do not divide cities other than San Diego.

The supervisors, with their 5-0 vote, asked staffers to refine the boundaries of the tentative plan and return with an ordinance in July. They were also asked to review an alternate plan submitted by ACLU lawyer Lori Shellenberger, who said the committee's proposed districts violate the Voting Rights Act.

A final map will be voted on in August.
