Fewer Drunk Driving Arrests This Holiday, But More Deaths

Statewide, 12 people have died in wrecks since Friday evening, according to the CHP. No highway fatals have been reported in San Diego County though.

California Highway Patrol officers in San Diego County arrested 32 suspected drunken drivers from Friday evening to 6 a.m. Sunday, 11 fewer than during the same time period last year, the CHP said.

Statewide, CHP officers made 826 suspected drunken driving arrests over the start of Memorial Day weekend, down from the 845 arrests made on freeways and on roads in unincorporated areas during the same time period last year.

Law enforcement officers from agencies across the state reported 12 fatalities between 6:01 p.m. Friday and 6 a.m. Sunday, but none of those were in San Diego County, the CHP said.

No local fatalities were reported during the same time period in 2012, and five were reported elsewhere in the state last year, authorities said.
