DUI Driver Responsible for Coronado Man's Death to Be Sentenced

The driver's blood alcohol level was four times the legal limit at the time of the April 2010 crash, which killed Stevens Friedman, 95, of Coronado.

A woman who pleaded guilty to second-degree murder for driving drunk and causing a fatal head-on crash three years ago on the Silver Strand is scheduled to be sentenced Tuesday.

Melanie Rebecca Flores, 50, pleaded guilty in connection with the crash near the Coronado Cays that took the life of Stevens Benjamin Friedman, 95, on April 21, 2010.

Flores, who has been jailed since her arrest two months later, had three prior DUIs, according to the prosecution. Less than an hour after the fatal crash, the defendant's blood-alcohol level was measured at .32 percent – four times the legal limit, Deputy District Attorney Cally Bright said.

Coronado police said Flores drove her vehicle into two others. Friedman, a Coronado resident, was a front-seat passenger in one of those cars. The other drivers were injured, but survived.
