Crash on Coronado Silver Strand Kills 78-year-old Woman

An woman pulls out in front of a driver going full speed on the highway and is rear-ended.

A 78-year-old woman was killed in a two-car collision on the Silver Strand Wednesday night.

Claire Dietz, a Coronado resident, was making a left turn out of Fiddlers Cove onto the southbound side of the highway.

“She pulled into the No. 1 lane, and then immediately pulled into the No. 2 lane, in front of a vehicle travelling 50 miles an hour,” said Lea Corbin, public affairs officer for the .

Witnesses said Dietz was travelling at about 15 miles per hour, Corbin added.

Dietz’s Subaru was struck from behind, which caused the car to roll several times, according to police.

Police received the call for help at 6:35 p.m. Corbin said Dietz was found dead, before paramedics could treat her.

The other driver involved was a 24-year-old man, who sustained minor injuries as a result of the crash. He was driving a small SUV.

Police said the man was not speeding. The speed limit on the Silver Strand is 65 miles per hour. 

Police closed both southbound lanes on the Silver Strand at Tulagi Road. The lanes remained blocked for several hours.
