Kimberly Cunningham is a graduate of the USC Annenberg School for Communication & Journalism, where she earned a master's degree in print journalism. She has written for various publications including The Orange County Register and the community-based Anaheim Bulletin. She is also a recipient of the Art Buchwald Award for Humor Writing.

From a young age, Kimberly was drawn to the art of story telling. She majored in theater at the University of California, San Diego, and after college, she moved to New York City. In 2005, she returned to the West Coast to attend graduate school at USC.

Throughout her life, Kimberly has held an array of interesting positions, including celebrity nanny to an A-list actress in New York and personal assistant to the general manager of the San Diego Padres. In Los Angeles, she worked briefly at the entertainment public relations firm BWR and at the commercial production company Backyard, where she focused on new media and entertainment branding.

Kimberly recently completed her first novel and hopes to continue writing long into the future. It is this love of a good story that led her to the field of journalism.

She is thrilled to be covering the beautiful city of Coronado, which is just a short trip across the bay from her hometown of Point Loma.

Kimberly loves to play golf (although she is admittedly terrible at it), and she can't wait to try her skills on Coronado's new bowling green. The president of the Lawn Bowling Club has promised her a free lesson, and she intends to hold him to his word.

Beliefs

At Patch, we promise always to report the facts as objectively as possible and otherwise adhere to the principles of good journalism. However, we also acknowledge that true impartiality is impossible because human beings have beliefs. So in the spirit of simple honesty, our policy is to encourage our editors to reveal their beliefs to the extent they feel comfortable.

This disclosure is not a license for our editors to inject these beliefs into stories or to dictate coverage according to them. In fact, the intent is the opposite: we hope that the knowledge that our beliefs are on the record will force us to be ever mindful to write, report, and edit in a fair, balanced way. And if you, the user, ever think we failed in this mission, we wholeheartedly invite you to let us know.

Politics

How would you describe your political beliefs?

My sticking points are women's rights, gay rights, human rights, animal rights and issues involving global warming. Don't get me started on the "plastic bag" debate!

Are you registered with a certain party?

Yes. But I often vote across party lines, and I always welcome an "open-minded" discussion of the issue at hand.

Religion

Do you consider yourself religious?

Yes.

Do you identify with a certain religion? If so, which one?

I was raised Roman Catholic, and I spent much of my adolescence in Catholic school. Admittedly, it is not a perfect religion, but having faith has helped me get through difficult times. Above all, I believe in tolerance of our differences as a human race and acceptance that we don't always have control.

Local Hot-Button Issues

What do you think are the most important issues facing the community?

From what I hear, the biggest issues in Coronado are traffic congestion and over-building. I attended the Town Hall meeting on traffic and listened to everyone's suggestions. I also know Mayor Tanaka is very interested in preserving the charm of Coronado. Hence, the over-building debate.

Patch is a place where the people of Coronado can discuss these and other important issues facing the city. We will do our best to keep everyone informed and involved.
