Coronado Fire Chief to Retire—Again

Chief John Traylor of the Coronado Fire Department will retire in July. Traylor previously retired in 2003, but returned to help out the city in 2009.

Coronado Fire Chief has announced his re-retirement from the effective July 2, 2011. Traylor previously served as fire chief for the City of Coronado Fire Department from 1997 to 2003 and returned to the chief position in 2009.

“The City of Coronado is thankful that Chief Traylor agreed to serve again and provide his experience and leadership during a time of transition at the city,” said City Manager Blair King. “John has been an invaluable asset to me and it is hard to see him go. We wish John good luck in his re-retirement.”

Traylor’s service to the City of Coronado was the culmination of more than 40 years in the fire service that began in 1966 when he served as a firefighter in the United States Air Force, followed by 27 years of service to the City of El Cajon Fire Department where he served as fire division chief before coming to the City of Coronado.

Traylor has also served as a consultant to the Local Area Formation Commission and for the City of Solana Beach on fire service consolidation.

During his service to Coronado, Traylor was instrumental in bringing advanced life support (paramedic) service to the city and formalizing mutual aid and automatic aid agreements between Coronado, Federal Fire (Navy), and the South Bay cities.

The city will immediately begin a recruitment to find Traylor's replacement, in anticipation of having a new fire chief appointed by July 1, 2011.
