Cmdr. William Marten, One-Time Coronado Church Deacon, Dies

Cmdr. William Marten, who spent 22 years with the Navy and served as a deacon at Graham Memorial Presbyterian, died May 20, according to Legacy.com. He was 94.

The Minneapolis native served during World War II, left the Navy and returned in 1949. 

He was deployed to South Korea and was executive officer aboard the USS El Dorado before coming to San Diego to head the Navy Personnel Research and Development Center in Point Loma, the report said.

In addition to being a church deacon, the father of two and grandfather of two also enjoyed performing at Memorial Day and Veterans Day ceremonies and volunteering with the PTA and the Salvation Army.

A Navy burial at sea is planned.
