5 Things: Around the Region

County officials issue a warning about vaccinations, while the Old Globe needs a new leading man.

News to cap off the week, from around San Diego County:

  • More than 42,000 students in the county still must prove they are up to date with their Tdap vaccination so they can enter school this fall, officials said. A new state law requires that children in seventh through 12th grades prove they are current with the shot, which helps prevent pertussis, tetanus and diphtheria. Students can enroll without proof, but they have one month to show that they've been vaccinated.
  • Unionized workers at Albertsons, Ralphs and Vons supermarkets in the county and around Southern California voted Friday to accept their latest contract offer or authorize a strike. Union leaders contend the stores are trying to take away workers' health care benefits, while the chains deny the claim.
  • The Old Globe Theatre is looking for a new leading man for its production of The Rocky Horror Show following the departure of acclaimed Broadway actor James Barbour. His exit, announced Thursday, comes days after local media covered the actor's admission that he seduced a 15-year-old girl in New York.
  • State Attorney General Kamala Harris announced the arrests of 15 people in a drug trafficking organization that allegedly operated from Mexico to San Diego, Los Angeles and Riverside counties, while using proceeds to fund criminal activity in the U.S. Harris said the state Department of Justice began the probe after conducting numerous border stops of members of the organization, some of whom were gang members.
  • More dogs ill with the highly contagious parvovirus are coming into area shelters than last year, humane societies in San Diego and Escondido reported. The disease, which hits puppies in their first year of life, attacks the intestinal wall and is often fatal.
