San Diego Gas & Electric reports that roughly 1,400 customers in Coronado remain without power, as do thousands in Imperial Beach.

Initially 3,200 customers were without power when the outage began early Wednesday afternoon.

The cause of the outage is unknown. Officials initially projected power would be restored by 3 p.m. but now say it may not be back on until around 7 p.m.

Power went out at 12:17 p.m. in the village and North Island Naval Air Station, and the outage stretched down the Silver Strand to the Cays and further south, according to the utility's online map.

"Closed" and "No Power" signs were taped to many stores in the 800 and 900 blocks of Orange Avenue, including Vons, Rite Aid and Walgreens. Multiple people told Coronado Patch they were waiting to get prescription drugs outside closed pharmacies. Village Theater showings have also been canceled.

Patti Nordengreen, owner of Wine Styles at 928 Orange Ave., has closed most of her shop during the outage.

"We've got our wine bar open but it's just cash only since the registers don't open," she said. "I think the biggest concern for the restaurants is food."

Elsewhere in Coronado, businesses in the 1100 block of Orange Avenue still have electricity. The pool at the Coronado Community Center is closed, according to the city.

The electricity went out at the Coronado Police Department, but generators kicked in to restore power.

For the most part the outage does not appear to have impacted signal lights or traffic, said Chief Jon Froomin.

One signal light is out at the intersection of Tarawa Road and State Route 75 near the entrance of Naval Amphibious Base.
