Comic Con Brings Hollywood to Coronado

Coronado hasn't studied the economic impact of Comic Con, but social media offers some proof that the city gets in on the fun, whether from the pros or excited fans.

Is Coronado connected to Comic Con? You bet.

From Adam Glass, a writer for the CW series “Suprnatural,” who has tweeted that he's at the Hotel del Coronado, to fans, publicists and even local residents, Coronado is not missing out on the annual pop culture fest that takes over San Diego each July.

And hey, as awesome as the Con is, one poster says Coronado, is well, more awesome.

“I think I may be there more than Comic Con,” wrote Graeme Devine, the designer behind the games “The 7th Guest” and “The 11th Hour.”

From Twitter, Comic Con attendees are not only at the Del, but also the Marriott and Loews, and they are enjoying the convenience of hopping the ferry rather than fighting the crush around the San Diego Convention Center in cars.

Several Coronado hotels reported no vacancies during Comic-Con weekend, which ends Sunday.

"Ninety percent of our guests are from Comic-Con," said Derrick Arce, who works the front desk at the Coronado Inn. "We usually sell out for this weekend by February or March."

Hundreds of thousands of people who came for the annual convention are expected to spend $203 million in the next three years in the region, according to the San Diego Convention Center Corp.

No study has been conducted to determine the economic impact of Comic-Con on Coronado, said Todd Little of the Coronado Tourism Improvement District.

"There's no hard data that I know of other than the hotels are full, but that's probably a combination of it being summer and Comic Con on top of it," Little said.

"Hotels in the North County are even sold out on this thing," said Darren Pudgil with the San Diego Tourism Authority.
