Coronado Yoga Studio Brings Yoga to Younger Audience

With more than a dozen yoga studios in Coronado, Minnie Ortegon decided that rather than opening up another studio for adults, she would try to bring yoga to a different audience—kids.

Minnie’s Little Yogis, which opened recently, offers classes for children ranging from age four to teenagers. As a mother of two with an A.A. in Child Development from the University of San Antonio, Ortegon strongly believes in the benefits of yoga for children.

“It can help with studying and concentration, it keeps body awareness, and can assist them with other sports they are participating in,” Ortegon’s assistant Susan Delay said.

With certifications for both child and adult yoga instruction, Ortegon has been teaching yoga for more than 20 years and uses creative methods to keep children engaged in the yoga practice.

“They do a lot of the same poses that the adults do and focus on some of the same breath work, but she makes it easier for them to understand by stimulating their creative side,” Delay said.

Ortegon also utilizes music and helps maintain interest in the poses by encouraging her students to hold the pose the longest, but insists, “there’s no winners, everybody wins.”

Minnie’s Little Yogis also offers events where parents can take classes with their kids and participate in partner poses where they can bond with their child over a new hobby, as well as opportunities for a unique birthday party.

On Nov. 22, Minnie’s Little Yogis is partnering with nearby Coronado restaurants for Parents (Date) Night Out. Parents can drop their children off and then go to Coronado Firehouse Grill, Coronado Brewing Company, Tartines or Candelas and enjoy a romantic dinner without kids at a discount when they mention Minnie’s studio. From 7 to 9 p.m. the children will be occupied while parents wine and dine, and hopefully will return more Zen-like at the conclusion of the evening.

For more information, visit the studio at 134 B Ave., Coronado, CA 92118 or call 619-942-1095 to schedule a class.
