City's Animal Care Facility Under Quarantine for Ringworm Outbreak

A cat spread ringworm to several city employees and an Animal Care Facility volunteer in Coronado.

The Coronado Animal Care Facility is under a self-imposed quarantine due to a ringworm outbreak through Sept. 14. The city announced the quarantine Thursday morning.

Several city employees and a facility volunteer contracted the skin fungus after exposure to an infected feral cat, the city reported.

The employees and volunteer are being treated for the condition, which was diagnosed last week.

"It is part of the peril of having a facility that accepts all animals, including feral cats," said Coronado Police Cmdr. Laszlo Waczek in a statement. "You can't see it unless you're looking for it."

The facility was reportedly cleaned with bleach and hot water. In addition, all animals were bathed with a medicated shampoo, according to the city. The infected cat is being treated as well.

The Animal Care Facility will be open during the quarantine, however there will be no public contact with the animals and no adoptions during this period.
