Police Bust Up 1st Street Party Due to Under-Aged Drinking

Criminal charges are expected to be filed against an 18-year-old resident after scores of teens fled the party when officers arrived. Two teens were sickened and required medical treatment.

Two teens were taken to the emergency room and scores were dispersed by Coronado police last weekend after neighborhood complaints led officers to break up an alcohol-fueled party.

The party took place at a bayfront home in the 600 block of 1st Street, where police said a neighbor summoned them at about 10 p.m. May 25 after spotting teens outside drinking.

About 100 young people attending the party quickly fled, said police spokeswoman Lea Corbin, but officers questioned an 18-year-old male resident after finding “alcohol all over” the home.

Police will issue him a citation for contributing to the delinquency of minors, but also plan to ask the District Attorney's Office to consider pursuing a misdemeanor case against him.

Officers later received information from Sharp Coronado Hospital that doctors had tended to teens who had attended the party.

The girls, ages 16 and 17, were brought in to the emergency room by their parents, Corbin said, after showing signs of alcohol poisoning. They were treated and released.

Police are pursuing the more serious charge, Corbin said, because of “the circumstances and the totality of the event” – the number of teens involved, the amount of alcohol found at the home and the sickness of the two girls.

In addition, officers are continuing to collect information about the party because the police confiscated purses and the property that contained IDs.

Since it is graduation season, Corbin also took the opportunity to remind residents that city code places responsibility upon adults who allow under-aged drinking.

The law allows police to cite anyone over 18 found to be in control of the premises at a party involving three or more of those who are under-aged and consuming alcohol.
