Delux Coronado Gourmet Dogs – Now Being Served

The traditional hot dog gets a makeover at the new restaurant that occupies the old Stretch's Cafe.

Hot dogs will never be the same again, at least not after you’ve tried a dog at Coronado’s newest eatery, Delux Coronado Gourmet Hot Dogs at 943 Orange Ave.

Business has been brisk after managing partners Kirsten Bertz and James McGee opened their new venture a few weeks ago.

“The Coronado community has been very welcoming,” Bertz told me when I dropped by to sample the Delux Corn Dog. The turkey dog is dipped in cornmeal batter which is handmade on the premises daily.

During the test opening, customers were introduced to some of the signature items Delux Dogs is serving along with the 100 percent Vienna brand
all-beef hot dogs on fresh Bread & Cie buns.

One of the best-sellers so far is the Border Town Dog, which consists of a bacon-wrapped and deep fried beef link with creamy nacho cheese sauce, hot sauce, guacamole, salsa fresca and Mexican crema.

Chicago original-style neon green relish and deli mustard from New York City’s Katz Delicatessen will add to the nostalgic feel of this traditional fare, though it is served in a modern industrial atmosphere.

The menu also includes salads, “Snax,” and “Drinx,” like fresh-squeezed lemonade and Malibu’s organic Beachy Cream Ice Cream Sandwiches, which are available exclusively at Delux Dogs in Southern California.

McGee is a veteran of the food business, having worked at Ruth Chris in San Diego over 18 years. He knows how to cater to particular patrons.

“We are working to put together a special selection of quick items for the high school lunch crowd,” McGee said. And he and Bertz are also offering military customers a 10% discount.

They still plan a formal grand opening for Delux Dogs, which took over the former site of Stretch's Cafe, but don’t have a firm date yet. Check back because plans are in the works!
