Nearly 30 team members qualified for the upcoming meet during last week's city conference finals.
Several members of Coronado High School's boys and girls swim teams will compete Thursday in the preliminary rounds of the Division II CIF Championships. Qualifying for the event, to be held at Del Norte High School in 4S Ranch, took place May 11 at City Conference Championships at La Jolla High School where 27 Islander athletes' times were strong enough to move them to the CIF meet. Both teams finished in second place in La Jolla. The finals are set for Saturday. In a statement coaches Dave Hughes and Randall Burgess called the La Jolla event “a significantly successful afternoon.” Some of the highlights:

Cheers greet San Diego mayor's knock against rival Oakland, booed several times at event.
San Diego Mayor Jerry Sanders on Friday night was among many civic lights and NFL stars to hail Junior Seau at his Celebration of Life at Qualcomm Stadium. He also got a dig in against Oakland Raiders fans. A private celebration for the former NFL star drew hundreds to Calvary Chapel in Oceanside Friday.

A heavy-hitting lineup of former Chargers football players tops the speakers' list for Friday's memorial service for Junior Seau at Qualcomm Stadium, the team announced Wednesday. Quarterback Dan Fouts, safety Rodney Harrison and running back LaDainian Tomlinson will speak at the "Celebration of Life" honoring Seau, the ex- linebacker who fatally shot himself in the chest one week ago today. Harrison, in particular, has spoken passionately about how the 43-year-old Oceanside native mentored him after he was drafted. The San Diego Padres are on a roll—having won two games in a row. Better yet, the 11-20 Friars are no longer the worst team in baseball. (Thank you, 8-21 Twins!) But mired in last place in the National League West, the Padres are 8 1/2 games behind the division-leading Dodgers. (The horrors!) It could be worse. That is why the proposal by the Transportation Corridor Agencies (TCA) to build a toll road through San Onofre State Beach in northern San Diego County has received so much attention. Locals honored the former Chargers player Sunday.
Friends and fans of ex-Chargers linebacker Junior Seau, who killed himself Wednesday with a shot to the chest, held a paddle-out memorial in front of his waterfront home in Oceanside Sunday. The 43-year-old Oceanside native played 20 seasons in the National Football League, mostly for the Chargers, but also for the Miami Dolphins and New England Patriots. In 1992, he created the Junior Seau Foundation, an organization formed to raise money and other resources for programs that educate young people and guide them on positive paths. Gabriel Medina, 18, was crowned the victor at the Nike Lowers Pro 2012 6-star ASP Prime surf contest Saturday at Lowers Trestles in North San Diego County. The young Brazilian surfer earned a $40,000 paycheck, a 14-karat gold spike and the adoration of the crowd of more than 1,500 who watched him best Glen Hall in the 3-5' waves. Once again the waves at Trestles during the five day event were rippable, rideable and consistent, providing a solid performance platform for the world's best surfers. Thursday the Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed that Junior Seau’s death was a suicide. The 43-year-old NFL legend died Wednesday inside his Oceanside home from a gunshot wound to the chest, which the Medical Examiner determined to be self-inflicted. Deputy Medical Examiner Dr. Craig Nelson conducted the forensic autopsy, according to a news release from the county. The autopsy included a full inspection of Seau’s body and organs—and a host of laboratory studies, including a toxicology report and a microscopic examination of organs and tissues. The results of those tests will be part of the final autopsy report. Researchers outside of the medical examiner's office may study Seau's brain for repetitive injury if his family consents, …
