Known by locals as The Theater on the Bay, the City of Coronado Community Playhouse offers quality entertainment in…More an idyllic setting. The theater is in the community center along Glorietta Bay. But don't be fooled by its state-of-the-art facility: The Coronado Playhouse is the oldest community theater in San Diego County. It was founded in 1946 and has operated out of several different locations in Coronado, from North Island to the Ferry Landing. However, it spent the majority of these years in a small building near its current location. This building was torn down when the city built the community center, and it rebuilt the playhouse, which opened in 2006.
The theater offers intimate, cabaret-style seating with a full bar and refreshments that you can enjoy during the show. Dinner is available on opening nights and certain holidays.
Since 1997, the Playhouse has been hosting an annual Shakespeare festival. It produces one Shakespeare play each summer, and these performances are free to the public. For tickets, send a self-addressed and stamped envelope to the address listed above.
The playhouse is self-supported through box office revenue, season tickets sales, donations and volunteers.
The Coronado School of the Arts (CoSA) is a high school for the performing and creative arts. It's a "school within a…More school" located on the campus of Coronado High School. The program offers students with passion and talent an opportunity to hone their skills further through an intensive arts curriculum, which adds an extra two hours of classes to their daily academic schedule. The conservatory-style instruction includes: instrumental music, musical theater/drama, technical theater, classical and contemporary dance and visual art. CoSA also has a Digital Media and Filmmaking Department. In addition to their coursework, students perform in various concerts, productions and exhibitions throughout the year. As a result of its success, California has recognized CoSA as a demonstration site for the state.
Admission is open to students throughout San Diego County, and admission is granted by application and/or recommendation only.
