Two men who robbed and shot a pair of San Diego-based sailors in an area of Otay Mesa popular for after-hours drinking and bonfires were sentenced Friday to life in prison without parole. Edward Jesus Elias and Leopoldo Castro Chavez II, both 36, were convicted in March of first-degree murder. The defendants weren't eligible for the death penalty because they were both 17 at the time of the 1993 killings. Jurors who convicted the defendants also found that the Sept. 25, 1993, murders of Eugene "Cliff" Ellis, 20, and Keith Combs, 23, were committed during a robbery, along with a second special circumstance allegation of multiple murders. "This is a really tragic case for everybody," said Jeffrey Martin, the attorney for Elias. Dan Tandon, …

San Diego County will spend nearly 2 percent less in the fiscal year starting July 1, according to a budget presented to the Board of Supervisors Tuesday by the county's chief administrative officer. Walter Ekard presented the $4.77 billion spending plan to the board, which will begin its budget deliberations June 11. The spending plan represents a 1.9 percent reduction in spending compared to this year's budget of about $4.86 billion, Ekard said. Supervisor Dianne Jacob was upbeat. "This is a smaller budget this year than we've ever had," she said, "and we're doing more with less, and it's because of the creativeness and the innovation and the charge that everyone has at every level to try to do the best that we can to try to provide the …

The body that was found near the Coronado Islands was confirmed Tuesday as Theo Mavromatis, the skipper of the Aegean who had been missing since last month's crash during the Newport to Ensenada Yacht Race, the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office has confirmed. A body has been found near the Coronado Islands, but there was no immediate word Monday if it is that of the skipper of a yacht that broke apart during a race late last month, killing three others. A fisherman found a man's body about 2:30 p.m. Sunday near the Coronado Islands and the body was handed over to the San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office, U-T San Diego reported, citing U.S. Coast Guard officials. Officials would not say if the body is believed to be that of Theo Mavromatis. Mavromatis, 49, of Redondo Beach, and three other men were taking part in an annual Newport-to-Ensenada race when their 37-foot boat dropped off the event's vessel-tracking system about 1:30 a.m. April 28, according to the Newport Ocean Sailing …

The 911 call that alerted authorities to the shocking suicide of former Chargers star Junior Seau in his coastal North County home was made public today. A recording of the emergency call placed Wednesday morning by the 43- year-old ex-NFL great's hysterical girlfriend was obtained and posted by the celebrity news-and-gossip website TMZ. In the call, made about 9:30 a.m., the weeping woman screams, "Oh, my God! I need an ambulance. Oh, my God!" Breathing heavily, as if on the verge of hyperventilating, the girlfriend identifies herself as Megan says, "My boyfriend shot himself!" The dispatcher repeatedly asks the distraught woman to take deep breaths and try to calm down, and asks for her boyfriend's name and age. When Megan tells her, the…

Thursday the Medical Examiner’s Office confirmed that Junior Seau’s death was a suicide. The 43-year-old NFL legend died Wednesday inside his Oceanside home from a gunshot wound to the chest, which the Medical Examiner determined to be self-inflicted. Deputy Medical Examiner Dr. Craig Nelson conducted the forensic autopsy, according to a news release from the county. The autopsy included a full inspection of Seau’s body and organs—and a host of laboratory studies, including a toxicology report and a microscopic examination of organs and tissues. The results of those tests will be part of the final autopsy report. Researchers outside of the medical examiner's office may study Seau's brain for repetitive injury if his family consents, …
