Students Share Chelsea’s Light Scholarship

Eleven college-bound students, including one from Coronado, are part of the Sunflower Scholarship Class of 2012.

Displaying a “service over self” ethic and academic drive, 11 San Diego County students will receive their share of a scholarship totaling $70,000 from Chelsea’s Light Foundation.

Simmone Borel of  received the inaugural Tyler King Changemaker Award of $5,000, in addition to a $2,000 scholarship. Judges praised her commitment to her art, documentary filmmaking. She will attend San Francisco State University.

In this second year of the award, the Sunflower Scholarship class of 2012 represents a wide geographic stretch from Julian to Lakeside. Students are bound for an array of colleges, including Dartmouth, Berkeley, Bennett College and SDSU.

More than 310 students from 73 San Diego County high schools submitted applications, which were personally reviewed by Kelly and Brent King, parents of two years ago.

All winners receive a $2,000 award, with additional money provided during subsequent years of colleg. The winners are:
