The Coronado Junior Women’s Club presented its second annual Taste of Coronado Wednesday night. Some 550 people sampled dishes at restaurants from the Plaza to the Ferry Landing. There were 21 in all, with many participants serving drinks at happy-hour prices.
Because the evening was so warm, let people choose between a margarita and their signature white bean chili.
offered a taste of Orange Avenue Wit from . Owner Ron Chapman was on hand to share his knowledge of beer and brewing. brought in wine specialist Daniel Morando to oversee its tasting and to impart a little viniculture.
Besides the booze there was vegan chili, billy goat pizza, coconut soup, sushi, pulled pork sliders, watercress salad, picked green tomatoes and more. For dessert there was spooned quenelle of tiramisu, bourbon breaded pudding or a scoop of soft-served ice cream, and more.
“This is a trick or treat for grown-ups,” Kathy Bodi said to a friend as she lined up for some spaghetti carbonara at .
Not all of the participating business sold food, but that didn’t stop them from joining in the fun.
offered a selection of non-adult beverages. “We wanted to give people a chance to wet their whistle between tastings,” said Marco Perez, general manager. The shop also offered a 15 percent discount to people with a Taste of Coronado card.
offered a respite from it all. People stopping by could have a hand, scalp or neck massage or they could have their make-up freshened. There were also cookies to munch and teas to sip and a bottle of water to take with you.
Although their better angels suggested walking between venues to burn off the extra calories, most people listened to their feet and took the shuttle from one end of the island to the other.
Proceeds went to support Coronado SAFE’s Bully-Free Zone Initiative and the San Diego Family Justice Center, which works to protect victims of domestic violence.
