Sandcastle Competition Now Part of Sports Fiesta

A sandcastle competition was added to Sports Fiesta activities this year. The amateur competition will be larger next year, the event organizer said.

About 100 people came to North Beach Sunday for the Optimist Club of Coronado's first sandcastle competition in what will become a regular fixture of the annual Sports Fiesta.

The Kopinski family took first place honors in the amateur competition for their sandcastle. Top teams received gift certificates to Village Pizzeria, McP's Irish Pub and Grill and the Coronado Fire Department spaghetti dinner.

A sandcastle competition was added as an event during the 42nd Annual Sports Fiesta in order to provide additional options for people who may not be athletic enough to join the 10K run, triathlon or one-mile ocean swim, said organizer Bruce Johnson.

The competition will be larger next year, he told Coronado Patch.

A sand sculpting how-to was held by the Sand Squirrels before the start of the competition.
