Grunion Run Season Ends This Weekend

Sunday is the last day of fishing for the beach critters that must be caught with your hands.

The last grunion runs of 2012 are expected to take place this weekend.

According to the state Department of Fish and Game, grunions wiggle onto beaches to spawn from Point Conception in Santa Barbara County to Point Abreojos, Baja California.

Spawning typically occurs at night in two-hour periods. The average female lays between 1,600 and 3,600 eggs during each spawning session.

Fishers 16 and over should have a license, can use only their hands to capture grunion and can take only what they can use.

Open grunion fishing will begin again in March.
