From Surfing to Science: Summer Camp Guide 2013

Day and overnight camps can be found all over San Diego County and beyond. Move fast – some camps fill up quickly.

It won’t be long before schools let out for the summer, signaling the start of summer camp season.

Parents and campers from Coronado can choose in town or from dozens of specialty options within driving distance, some tailored to specific interests, while others feature familiar activities like canoeing, horseback riding, hiking and camping out.

Below is a varied list of camps, brief descriptions and links to websites with more information.

Name: Nike Golf Camp

Location: University of San Diego

Type of camp: Golf instruction at a variety of courses. Overnight with a day camp option.

Cost: $1,445 overnight; $1,345 day camp.

When: Five five-day sessions in late June through July.

Details: Golfers of all abilities between ages 10 and 18 will be instructed by coaches Mike Wydra and Marc Chandonnet on several area courses. Campers will stay at residence halls on the USD campus in Mission Valley. Evening activities include barbecues, pizza night and a Padres game.

Name: SeaWorld

Location: San Diego

Type of Camp: A wide selection of day and overnight camps exploring the park’s marine life.

Cost: $145-$1,000.

When: All summer long

Details: Four day camps for grades K-9, a day camp for ages 3-5 and their parents, and three overnight camps for grades 5-12. The ultimate SeaWorld experience.

Name: Nick Hardwick & Vincent Brown Football Camp

Location: University of San Diego

Cost: $800 for overnight, $720 for day camp.

Type of camp: Hardwick, Brown and other Chargers players will host campers and teach techniques for every position.

When: July 18-21

Details: Chargers players will be joined by college and high school coaches on the field using the same teaching techniques used in the NFL. Open to ages 7-8 and campers are grouped according to age, ability, size, experience and aggressiveness.

Name: Digital Media Academy

Cost: $865-$3,015, with add-on options available.

Location: UC San Diego

Type of camp: Technology. Day camp with overnight options.

When: One-week and two-week sessions in July and August.

Details: One-week day camps for ages 6-8, 8-12, and 10-12; one-week and two-week day camps for ages 13-17 with overnight options. Campers get a taste of college life and learn about game design, digital filmmaking and photography, robotics and more.

Name: YMCA Camp Surf

Location: Imperial Beach

Cost: $585-$1,370

Type of camp: Surfing and other activities on the Y’s 45-acre beachfront property.

When: Nine sessions held from June through August.

Name: Rawhide Ranch

Location: Bonsall

Type of camp: Horse riding and care, farm life, other activities. Overnight.

Cost: $930

When: Weeklong sessions from June 16 to Aug. 17

Name: Academy by the Sea

Location: Carlsbad

Cost: $950-$4,100

Type of camp: Academic and recreational camps on the campus of the Army and Navy Academy.

When: July

Details: The Army and Navy Academy is a private boarding school that opens its Carlsbad campus to campers during the summer. Academic camp for grades 7-12 is held July 1-27; recreation camps for ages 10-17 are held July 8-27, with a shorter one held July 1-7.

Name: Outpost Summer Camps

Location: Canyonside Community Park, Rancho Penasquitos

Cost: $160-$1,230, transportation included

Type of camp: Day camp with a variety activities in the park and around San Diego. Campers can be picked up and dropped off at home.

When: June through August

Details: Three different day camps are offered according to age: pre-camp for ages 3-5; day camp for grades 1-5; Senior Outpost for grades 6-9. Pre-camp is held at North City Presbyterian Church in Poway and no door-to-door transportation is available.
