The surf was 2-4', offshore and hollow for the URT Womp, a bodysurfing contest that included a record turnout of more than 100 participants, including 40 kids.
“We have perfect conditions today for bodysurfing,” URT's Dougie Mann said Sunday. URT is a clothing company founded by Mann and Ian Urtnowski, both of Coronado.
The URT Womp has morphed into a fun spectable of athletic ability, ocean passion and aloha that is held each summer at North Beach.
Vivienne Kurley, a Coronado Aquatics water polo player used her aquatics skills to win the kids or "sqURTs” division. Another Coronado High School water polo player and local surfer Kaleb Griffith placed first in the open division.
Standouts included Coronado Lifeguard and Rice University swimmer Carter Graves who dominated the hand plane division and Meredith Rose who placed second in the hand plane event.
“We do all this stuff to make friends and catch some good waves,” said Urtnowski.
