Title Town! Islander Boys, Girls Are Lacrosse Champs

Cathedral Catholic is the Coronado victim in both cases as the boys win 15-7 and the girls triumph 13-3.

Coronado is the prep lacrosse capital of San Diego County after the Islander boys and girls teams both claimed Division II championships Saturday at Westview High. Both came at the expense of Cathedral Catholic, with the Islanders taking the boys title 15-7 and the girls crown by a 13-3 count.

After spotting the Dons a 2-0 lead in the early going, Coronado (19-4) scored seven of the next eight goals to take a 7-3 halftime lead. Another closing streak put the game away. After Cathedral (17-5) closed the deficit to 10-7 with just under 8 minutes left, the Islanders scored five straight goals to win comfortably.

“Our seniors really buckled down and started burying shots," said Coronado coach Alex Cade. “Their goalie was pretty hot in the first half, but we definitely peppered him with a ton of shots in the second half. It was certainly a physical game, but a fair game too.”

Sophomore Jack Perkins was the Islanders' leading scorer with five goals. Alex Bookout added two scores and had four assists, and Kyle Runyon had a pair of goals. Reis Stanley made seven saves in goal.

This was the first year the lacrosse championships were split into two divisions, with Torrey Pines winning both Division I titles, the boys 10-7 over Poway and the girls 18-5 over Rancho Bernardo.

“We have done some great things at the D-1 level and it wasn’t what they wanted to hear to be bumped down to D-2, but I know they all feel great with the win here today,” said Cade of his top-seeded Islanders.

Maack, Couture Lead Islander Girls to the Title

Top-seeded Coronado had a better than 2-to-1 shots on goal advantage, scoring seven times on their first eight shots on their way to a 9-2 lead at the half.

Seniors Lauren Maack and Kaitlyn Couture each scored three goals to pace the Islander attack, with Michaela Guerrera and sophomore Caroline Carlson adding two scores each. Meganne Weissenfels  needed to make only a handful of saves in goal.

The Islanders finish the season 21-1, losing only to St. Ignatius of San Francisco and beating the two teams in the Division I championship game, Torrey Pines and Rancho Bernardo.
