Midway Museum Game Shifts to Sunday Because of Risk of Rain

Game matches up San Diego State and Syracuse.

The “Battle on the Midway” college basketball game aboard the USS Midway Aircraft Carrier Museum  was postponed to Sunday due to the possibility of rain on Friday, organizers said.

Tipoff for the match between 20th-ranked San Diego State and No. 9 Syracuse will now be at 1 p.m. Sunday, SDSU head coach Steve Fisher said at his weekly news conference.

A game that had been scheduled for Sunday night against San Diego Christian College will be moved to Nov. 13, according to SDSU.

The National Weather Service is forecasting cool temperatures and a 40 percent chance of rain on Friday, with showers likely that night. Sunday should be sunny with high temperatures around 68, according to the NWS.

"Everybody that knows anything has put their heads together and says this is probably appropriate and gives us almost a hundred percent certainty that there won't be weather issues," Fisher said.

The original backup plan had been to play the game as scheduled at the Valley View Casino Center.

The contest is a follow up to last year's the successful Michigan State-North Carolina game aboard the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson, an active-duty Navy aircraft carrier.

Two other college basketball games are set to be played on Navy vessels this weekend in honor of Veterans Day.

"The stands and the court and different things, a lot of it is up and they say it looks absolutely spectacular," Fisher said. "So we're very excited and looking forward to it. This is what we felt was in everyone's best interest to do, and what we're going to do."

The coach said his players will have a couple more days to prepare, but the Orangemen's size and famed 2-3 zone defense won't change over two extra days.
