Islanders Claim First Boys Water Polo Title Since ’07

Tommy Grall scores five goals, including the game-winner in OT, as Coronado edges Bishop's 9-8.

Tommy Grall scored 51 seconds into sudden-death overtime Saturday night to give the Coronado High boys water polo team a 9-8 win over Bishop's in the San Diego Section Division III final at La Jolla High's Coggan Pool.

It was Grall's fifth goal of the game and produced the 17th title in the sport for Coronado, all but the first (in 1968) under current coach Randy Burgess. The last championship had come in 2007. It was also a rematch of last year's title game, won by Bishop's 10-5. Both teams finished this season with 20-9 records.

Grall opened overtime by converting a penalty shot to give Coronado its first lead of the game. Eitan Peled had three goals for the Islanders and Joe Rodgers made eight saves in goal. Bishop’s goalie Caleb Schultz had 16 saves.
