Starting next week, Southwestern College's Crown Cove Aquatic Center in Coronado will begin to offer six-week surf and Hawaiian outrigger canoe classes without the need to enroll as a student at the college, said the center's director Patrice Milkovich.

Milkovich ran the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista for 10 years before coming to Crown Cove.

Lessons have been taught to Southwestern College students since the 1990s but many people in Coronado and Imperial Beach still don't know about lessons at Crown Cove, Milkovich said. For the first time this fall people can join Crown Cove classes without the need to enroll in college.

Starting Aug. 17, surf lessons will be held on Saturdays at Silver Strand State Beach. Course fee of $75 pays for the lesson, surfboard and a Silver Strand State Beach parking permit. A surf lesson may also be held Sundays if enough interest is shown, Milkovich said.

To enroll in the course call the Crown Cove Aquatic Center at 619-575-6176. Must be 16 or older to take part. Last day to register is Aug. 15.

People who choose to enroll at Southwestern College can take fall 2013 semester courses in sailing, kayaking, beach volleyball, stand up paddle board and lifeguard training.

Anyone can enroll for free at Southwestern College. You don't have to take classes in pursuit of a degree.

"An 80-year-old person can take a class for credit. It just means they sign up for the class," she said. "Once you enroll as a student and get your confirmation you can either enroll online or show up at the first class meeting and be added to the course provided there's space."

Nearly all courses offered cost less than $50 to join for the semester.

Fall 2013 classes at Southwestern College begin Aug. 19.
