Alice Schmidt of Coronado Races to Olympic Trials 800-Meter Final

Two-time NCAA champion from last decade keeps her London dreams alive at the age of 30.

Alice Schmidt clocked a 2:00.50 in the 800 meters Saturday to advance to Monday’s finals at the Olympic Trials in Eugene, OR. Her time was the second-fastest of two semifinal heats—behind only the 2:002.5 of Nike teammate Alysia Montano.

Alice Schmidt, a 30-year-old Coronado resident, is coached by Olympic 800 champion Joaquim Cruz with the Nike club. She hopes his example will lead her to her own Games experience.

Competing in a light drizzle, Schmidt won her heat of the 800 Friday night in 2 minutes, 3.51 seconds to advance to Saturday's semifinals at the Olympic Trials at Eugene, OR.

Schmidt, an NCAA champion in 2002 and 2003, overtook New Jersey prep star Ajee Wilson in the final 10 meters after trailing the lead pack for more than 400 meters at Hayward Field.

Molly Beckwith of Saucony has the fastest time Friday with her 2:00.61 in the third of four heats.
