The assessments, which test a child’s reading and math readiness, are voluntary, but “the district recommends that parents participate,” said Claudia Gallant, the  director of curriculum and learning.

“Information from the assessment will help each school make appropriate classroom placements for the 2012-2013 school year and help meet the students’ needs from the very first day,” she said.

While parents are waiting, they will be asked to complete a brief questionnaire. This will be used along with the assessment in placing the child in the best learning environment.

“As parents are the first and most important teachers of their children, they have special information that can assist [the district] in meeting a student’s needs,” Gallant said.

Class assignments will be revealed at kindergarten orientation at 10:30 a.m. Aug. 22 at both ECDC and Strand Elementary.

Information from the assessments and other pre-term evaluations will be given to parents during teacher conferences to be held during the first three weeks of school, from Aug. 23 through Sept. 14.

During this conference week, kindergarten students will be dismissed at 11:50 a.m. at ECDC and 11:45 a.m. at Strand Elementary.
