City Declares 'Jeffrey Felix Days' in Coronado

The proclamation honored the superintendent with not just one day, but two, for being recognized by the Association of California School Administrators.

Jeffrey Felix, who recently was named Superintendent of the Year in San Diego County, received another honor Thursday when Mayor Casey Tanaka proclaimed Thursday and Friday, Feb. 21-22, as Jeffrey Felix Days in Coronado.

The proclamation was an expression of the pride the city took in Felix’s honor, announced by the Association of California School Administrators and the San Diego County School Boards Association.

“There is nothing we cherish more than our students and our schools,” Tanaka said as he congratulated Felix on his leadership and the contributions he’s made to the community.

“It’s not easy for someone not from Coronado (to) sit in the middle of the cross streams and figure out this community,” he said of the Escondido resident.

Tanaka said Felix got two days, instead of the customary one, because no one could decide which day to set aside.

“Fortunately, as mayor, I can exceed my authority,” Tanaka, a teacher at Coronado High School, said in offering Felix the additional day.

The city’s proclamation came after Coronado Unified School District board members offered their own tributes to Felix.

Felix accepted the accolades, not for himself alone, but on behalf of his staff and the community at large, saying that a leader is “only as good as the people around” them.

“It's been a collaborative effort. Part of this is for the community, as well as myself personally,” he added.

Felix will receive his Superintendent of the Year award April 26.
