Updated: Navy Identifies Sailors Killed in Training Exercise at Camp Pendleton

Two Coronado sailors are dead and one more injured, after a water truck flips over during a joint Navy-Marine Corps training operation.

Two sailors were killed on Monday morning during a training exercise at Camp Pendleton. A third sailor was injured.

Petty Officer 3rd Class Daniel M. Shirar of Baytown, TX, and Constructionman Mychael A. Flint of Fort Ann, NY, were killed after a 7-ton water-hauling truck crashed and overturned, said Cmdr. Greg Hicks, a spokesman for the U.S. Third Fleet in San Diego.

Both sailors were equipment operators with Amphibious Construction Battalion One, which operates out of the Naval Amphibious Base in Coronado. Shirar, 27, was stationed with a reserve unit based in Houston. Flint, 21, was based in Coronado.

Navy officials said the accident occurred around 8 a..m., during a combined Navy-Marine Corps training exercise known as Pacific Horizons. The purpose of the exercise is to practice “interoperability,” so the different groups can work together.

“Marines embark Navy ships often,” said a spokeswoman for the U.S. Third Fleet.

The details of the crash are still being investigated.

The injured sailor was airlifted to a local hospital. He was treated and released for minor injuries, Hicks said. His name has not been released.
