A 33-year-old San Diego-based sailor died over the weekend as a result of a bombing in Kandahar Province in Afghanistan, the Pentagon announced Tuesday.

Petty Officer 2nd Class Michael J. Brodsky of Tamarac, Fla., died Saturday in Landstuhl, Germany. He had been stationed in Afghanistan while supporting Operation Enduring Freedom, according to the Defense Department.

Gov. Jerry Brown ordered flags over the state Capitol flown at half staff to salute Brodsky. According to a statement from the governor's office, the sailor's injuries were caused by an improvised explosive device.

Brodsky was assigned to Navy Region Southwest Security Detachment, San Diego.

This is a great event. Thank you to all of the volunteers who helped make it a fun and enrichingRead More experience for my family. We need to get the word out about this helpful event in Coronado for the future. It was a learning experience for children and adults alike. I feel better now with my daughter riding her bike on the busy streets of Coronado. Thanks again to all of the Police Officers, Boy Scouts, Girls Scouts and local volunteers.
