Republicans Plan to Offer Bilbray a Boost in 52nd

The National Republican Congressional Committee announced Thursday it will pour extra resources into helping Rep. Brian Bilbray, R-Solana Beach, retain his seat.

Bilbray, whose district was shifted south and east by redistricting, was named to the NRCC's Patriot Program, which helps incumbent Republicans representing swing seats.

The district now swings along the coast and includes Coronado, La Jolla, and to the east, Poway, among other communities.

Bilbray is opposed by San Diego Port Commissioner and former San Diego Councilman Scott Peters and former state legislator Lori Saldana—both Democrats.

Bilbray campaign adviser Duane Dichiara said Democrats will be unable to take back the House of Representatives if they don't win his 52nd District.

"We need proven fiscal reformers that are working to create jobs and Brian Bilbray is the best candidate to advance those principles," Dichiara said.

Bilbray has long been a Democratic target. Dichiara said the race will be one of the most competitive in the country.

Meanwhile, Peters announced endorsements from San Diego City Councilman David Alvarez, Assemblyman Ben Hueso, former Assemblywoman Mary Salas and Chula Vista Councilman Steve Castaneda.

He previously announced support from the San Diego and Imperial Counties Labor Council and Chicano Democratic Association.

"All of these Latino leaders share my passion to change our representation in Congress," Peters said. "They have worked with both Democratic candidates in this race, and they are backing me because they believe I am the one who can get the job done."

The primary election is June 5.
