Navy Plans to Expand Locally in Next 5 Years

The growth is expected to bring 12 ships and about 15,000 more people to the region.

The U.S. Navy plans to homeport two additional aircraft carriers and 10 more surface ships in the region by 2017, an admiral is expected to tell leaders Monday.

The Pentagon recently announced a shift of focus for U.S. military forces toward Asia and the Pacific Ocean, making local bases ripe for expansion.

Rear Admiral Dixon Smith's report says the addition of vessels will add 8,100 sailors and 6,700 family members to the region.

The number of aircraft carriers based in San Diego Bay has fluctuated in recent weeks as ships have been transferred and gone into yearlong retrofitting. The USS Carl Vinson, currently deployed in the Middle East, based locally; the USS Ronald Reagan is in Washington state for an overhaul.

The Navy has 58 surface ships based in San Diego, plus six submarines. Among the surface ships set to come to San Diego in the next few years are the new class of vessels called "littoral combat ships," which are designed to operate in coastal waters.

Smith said the Navy has a $30.5 billion annual economic impact on San Diego, and that 26 percent of all jobs in the region are related to the Defense Department.

Smith is set to make his remarks before the San Diego City Council.

The Navy says that San Diego will expand, and Duncan Hunter says that the defense budget is scary for San Diego. What is political and what is the truth? I am sure that the city leader's in this region would like to know? My bet is on the Navy!

Good. Tell them to build another training center while they're at it.

'...add 8,100 sailors and 6,700 family members to the region....'
8,000 government rent subsidies will push up the cost of housing and squeeze working families...not good...

libi, adding that many military people to the area will also boost sales in all stores, eateries, car sales, etc. If you own a business, you'd be very happy. Areas where the military bases have been shut down have been devastated by the loss of military money...just saying.

san diego is prime real estate - we don't need government subsidies.....and we don't need the additional population burdening our infrastructure and schools....
think how much money it cost the tax payer for one military person to pull $5.00 out of their pocket....now calculate the soldier's cost with the wife and 4 kids... let them build additional facilities in sparsely populated areas that can use the influx of population...
