Millions in Local Base Spending Part of Defense Bill

The House passed its version of the bill Friday, but months of talks remain.

The House version of the 2013 National Defense Authorization Act contains funding for nearly $300 million in San Diego area military projects, including $134 million of construction for Coronado.

At Naval Base Coronado the projects on tap include:

  • $76 million for Bachelor Quarters.
  • $10.1 million for Special Operations Forces (SOF) mobile communication facility.
  • $2.5 million for H-60s Helicopter Simulator Training Facility.
  • $31.2 million for SOF Indoor Shooting Facility.
  • $14 million for SOF Close Quarters Combat/Dynamic Shooting Facility.

San Diego projects include:

  • $59 million for Littoral Combat Ship Training Facility.
  • $11.7 million for Entry Control Point.
  • $91 million for Fuel Pier Replacement in Point Loma.

Rep. Susan Davis, D-San Diego, the community's current Congressional representative (Coronado will vote in the race for the new 52nd district seat come November), announced her support for the projects Friday, after the House passed its version of the legislation.

Much debate remains. President Obama did not sign the 2012 defense appropriations act into law until Dec. 31. The White House outlined its concerns with elements of the House's version Tuesday.

This is a great event. Thank you to all of the volunteers who helped make it a fun and enrichingRead More experience for my family. We need to get the word out about this helpful event in Coronado for the future. It was a learning experience for children and adults alike. I feel better now with my daughter riding her bike on the busy streets of Coronado. Thanks again to all of the Police Officers, Boy Scouts, Girls Scouts and local volunteers.
