Mayor Expresses Support for Coronado Police in Shacknai Case

Tanaka welcomes Dina Shacknai, who plans to appear at Tuesday's meeting regarding her son's case, but said he agrees with the police findings unless new evidence is presented.

A Shacknai will come before the City Council again Tuesday, but for a far less pleasant reason.

For months leading up to the July 2011 deaths that would transform his life, homeowner Jonah Shacknai sought permission from the city to renovate the Spreckels mansion.

He secured it for the final phases of the project – despite a battle with neighbors and preservationists – two months before his girlfriend and son would die within days of each other following incidents at the mansion.

At Tuesday's 3 p.m. council meeting, Dina Shacknai, his ex-wife, will press her argument that her 6-year-old son did not die as police determined, as the result of an accidental fall from a Spreckels staircase.

Last month, Coronado police rejected her contention that they should take another look at Max Shacknai's case and consider reclassifying his death as a homicide.

In response, Max's mother said “the system has failed us and it has failed Max., route: {:controller=>"articles", :action=>"show", :id=>"police-will-not-re-open-max-shacknai-case-zahau-spreckels-mansion-deaths"} -->” She

Gee, that is kind of interesting since Mayor Tanaka signed Dina's petition.
DRS September 18, 2012 at 04:53 PM
the question is: will the public show up to give her the support she deserves? or will this go the way of Jaws in Amity.
Justice for Max September 18, 2012 at 06:10 PM
Her lawsuit against the estate of the late babysitter will bring answers. RIP Maxie.
Robert Mack September 18, 2012 at 06:17 PM
Even in Dina's petition she calls Rebecca's manner of death questionable. I feel everyone has the right to answers and justice. City Councils are not law enforcement, nor are state senates which are the two groups Dina has appealed to. Is she just after the media attention or what is she hoping for? Her experts had 9 months to find new evidence and there is none. My guess is Tanaka supports Dina as I do in her search for answers but so far sees nothing to suggest Max was murdered. Real Answers to Real Questions and Justice for Rebecca Zahau and Max.
Joanne Dugger September 18, 2012 at 06:51 PM
It is clear that Rebecca Zahau or her sister had a role in Max's "accident". Just what did she do to that adorable child that caused her to take her life less than 48 hours after his "fall"?
roger September 18, 2012 at 07:52 PM
The significance of Dina's quest to re-open Max's case was her statement on-air about 10 days ago when she said,"I thought Max would be back playing soccer until that Friday when I was told by the doctor that his condition turned worse."Dina and Jonah spent most of the week at Max's bedside....can't believe Dina wouldn't know Max's condition turned grave late Tuesday night - or at least Wed - or by Thursday unless Jonah fabricated the contents of the hearsay voicemail Tuesday night/early Wed.am to Rebecca. Bill Gore used Jonah Shacknai's HEARSAY voicemail as his SOLE REASON to explain Rebecca's sudden/intricate suicide early Wed. morning sometime between 1:00am -3:00am. Jonah asserted that he left a voicemail to Rebecca that Max's condition suddenly turned grave.....that's 50 + hours BEFORE Dina was given that type of dismal medical news. There was NEVER any confirmation from Dr. Peterson at Rady hospital that he informed Jonah late Tuesday night that Max's condition turned grave nor did detectives share info that hospital charts confirmed Jonah's Tuesday night/early am Wed.hearsay dismal medical news. Without Gore "buying into" Jonah's contents of hearsay medical news.....there is no logical reason for a young/fit 32 year old woman with NO drugs/alcohol in her system to commit such a sudden and intricate suicide. So media members.....what say you?
Tomas September 18, 2012 at 08:05 PM
Signing the petition might get Rebecca's case re-opened.
Robert Mack September 18, 2012 at 08:57 PM
Why is it certain people have a problem with the FACT that Rebecca was Jonah's girlfriend? It is a fact that I am sure even her family regrets but a fact just the same. Real Answers to Real Questions and Justice for Rebecca Zahau and Max.
Your lion September 19, 2012 at 12:01 AM
All they had to do is keep quiet and this story would have disappeared. For $ome $trange reason, Dina needs to prove guilt through Rebecca or Xena. Remember she is a doctor of psychology. So what is she thinking? Uh - $$$$$$$$$$. The council is probably laughing.
Tell The Truth September 19, 2012 at 03:19 AM
Dina doesn't need money. Max, however, needs justice. RIP Max.
Tell The Truth September 19, 2012 at 03:20 AM
Robert, whether or not Rebecca and Jonah were sleeping together has no bearing on who Rebecca was to Max. On the day little Max was left in her care, she was not his stepmother, she was not his mother, she was not his sister, she was not his aunt. She was his babysitter. By her own words, she was "babysitting" Max.
Teddy September 19, 2012 at 05:21 PM
So all live in girlfriends are just "babysitters" is that what you are saying "so tell the truth"? That is a huge insult to women everywhere that you continue to throw out there, or is your attempt to just insult a dead woman that can't fight back. She was not in the home in the capacity of a babysitter. She was not getting paid to be a babysitter. Using your logic girlfriends are nothing more than cooks, maids, home nurses, sex workers, drivers, and therapist. That is an incredibly callous perception of women I would hope your mother would teach you better.
Teddy September 19, 2012 at 05:27 PM
Everyone can use more money. If you ask Bill Gates if he wants more money I am sure his reply would be "Yes, please". Not dismissing that Dina wants recognition of what she believes happened. Accidents are always the hardest to believe.
Teddy September 19, 2012 at 05:33 PM
Roger, If there is no voicemail and Max did not take a grave turn then what else did Gore lie about? Has everything been fabricated to protect someone, is Dina's media push just part of that plan?
Facts September 19, 2012 at 08:06 PM
Teddy, what Rebecca's role was to anyone else at the time Max received his fatal injuries is not the issue. What is the issue is what Rebecca's role to Max was. She was not his stepmother. She was his babysitter, and we all know that statistics for babysitters injuring children is high.
Salem September 20, 2012 at 12:33 AM
Are you sure Mayor Tanaka signed the petition? I think it was someone else who fraudulently used his name.
Mickey Mouse September 20, 2012 at 04:37 AM
Jonah is a slippery critter... there is a LOT more to this story than whats being told... I say re-open it and let sunlight disinfect the shadows and lies that are being tossed about... Gore intrigues me, lets start with him and next lets investigate dumanis and her campaign for mayor...running a campaign is VERY expensive, and then we can move on to pfingst.
Q&A for N&A September 20, 2012 at 05:38 AM
Max doesn't "need" anything, nor does Rebecca. They are dead over one year. The murderers "need" to be imprisoned for life. Who was at the house? A: Nina and Adam Start there.
matchpoint September 20, 2012 at 08:07 PM
So mothers are just babysitters too? Jonah said he was going to purpose to Rebecca, for all purposes she was Max's step mom in every way except on paper. She lived in the home and though she had an excellent history with children she had no history of ever being a baby sitter. Dismiss her place in the home and her relationship with Max does not change the facts. You insult all women with your slurs against this women and the fact that she is already dead makes you look petty and pathetic. Everyone that reads these comments know exactly why you keep doing it. You are either a snotty teenager with no sense, or an evil vindictive adult with the heart of a murderer. That being the case you appear to be supporting the right people.
matchpoint September 20, 2012 at 08:15 PM
@jfm Too bad for you that Dina said she wasn't interested in a lawsuit and that would be the last thing she would do. I guess you were left out of the loop or someone is a big fat liar. Good for you that I find you more credible and Dina is most likely the liar.
matchpoint September 20, 2012 at 08:29 PM
@thomas, Signing a petition to reopen a death investigation addressed to the state senate will do nothing. If Dina really wanted her son's case reopened she would hire the right experts to find real new evidence that proves homicide or malfeasance and get law enforcement to listen. Dina more than likely just wants publicity for her new business venture. That is why she is doing this nonsense publicity tour with the Martz Agency PR firm in tow.
Facts Straight September 20, 2012 at 09:56 PM
Or has the Zahau's media plan been to protect XENA??? What does XENA know????? What did Rebecca do to MAX???
Facts Straight September 20, 2012 at 09:57 PM
Teddy, SUICIDES are always the hardest to believe. But time for Mary to try.
Facts Straight September 20, 2012 at 09:58 PM
Jonah is simply a man that lost his son and girlfriend within days of each other. I think he is in denial about Rebecca's role in Max's accident. I think it is much easier for him to believe it was an accident.
Facts Straight September 20, 2012 at 09:59 PM
Please sign Dina's petition to have Max's case reopened. She needs to know what really happened to Max. http://www.change.org/petitions/tell-the-coronado-police-dept-re-open-the-investigation-into-max-shacknai-s-death
Mike Miller September 21, 2012 at 02:14 PM
I'm not sure that's accurate. If the criminal cases are not revisited, then - right or wrong - by law there was no wrong-doing. And, while civil cases have come up behind criminal aquittals (see OJ Simpson) successfully, there were TWO people in the house, Rebecca and AND her sister. The presence of either creates enough reasonable doubt for both, and suggesting that both were involved would be a different matter; conspiracy, which would be impossible to prove with one party dead and no documentation or solid evidence. The key to unravelling this is going to be a more thorough examination of the findings of the coroner, the police reports, and the handling of the case surrounding BOTH Max's and Rebecca's deaths deserve respectful and proper consideration by the District Attorney's office and the Coronado Police Department, and right now, it looks like neither has. From an Outside Observer's viewpoint, I see MONEY on one side, a "disposable" (no offense meant, just bitterness) immigrant on the otherside, and methinks I smell just another government coverup!
BBL September 21, 2012 at 08:49 PM
why isn't the petition directed to the sherrif or police?
Gotta be September 21, 2012 at 10:54 PM
There are four people who may have been involved in Rebecca's death. Jonah, Dina, Nina and Adam. The message on the door holds the key. SHE SAVED HIM, CAN YOU SAVE HER So could it be Jonah in his own house leaving a message to someone and a pile of evidence? No, not even remotely possible Could it be Adam? No, same reason. A murder without a message, maybe, but with him being chief suspect? Again, no. Would Nina be so angry as to plan and execute the death with knives, rope, paint, gag and nude body? No. She was just trying to be a supportive twin-sister. So who brought 2 knives, 2 brushes, 2 sets of gloves, the Dr. Pepper can, the water bottle, the paint, the red-dye pepper spray and the rope? So who did it? The two who composed the message on the door. So obvious.
Blame game September 22, 2012 at 06:16 PM
Must bug Jonah that Dina still has the Shacknai name and a lot of his money. It's Romano, like the cheese. Dina didn't like Rebecca using her own real name. How two-faced.
joseph gendron September 28, 2012 at 01:19 AM
Because Jonah's girlfriend Rebecca DOES make it a little weirder..
