Democratic Assemblyman Marty Block and Republican George Plescia, a former Assemblyman, will meet again in the fall in the race to represent the 39th District in the state Senate.
Plescia said early in the evening, as the trend in the race became clear, that he expects to have “a spirited battle in November” with Block, referring to the general election.
The district includes Coronado, La Jolla and Solana Beach, while taking in several San Diego neighborhoods and sweeping north and east roughly along Interstate 15.
The race was expected to be closely fought, given that Block and Plescia are well-known political hands with broad experience in legislative matters.
With nearly all precincts reporting:
- Block received 46.15 percent of the vote.
- Plescia received 43.86 percent.
- Patrick Marsh received 9.99 percent.
