First Openly Gay Assembly Speaker to Receive Human Rights Award

San Diego Democrats for Equality will give a humanitarian award to Assembly Speaker John Perez at a private home in Coronado Sunday.

Assembly Speaker John Perez, (D-Los Angeles), is scheduled to receive a human rights award from a San Diego organization of gay and lesbian Democrats Sunday.

San Diego Democrats for Equality will bestow the A. Brad Truax Human Rights Award on Perez at a private home in Coronado.

In 2010 Perez became the first openly gay Assembly speaker in the country, according to SDDE. He also served on the President's Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS under presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush.

Before he was elected to the Assembly, Perez worked for labor organizations for 15 years, including the California Labor Federation and as political director of the United Food & Commercial Workers Local 324.

The organization will hand out other awards to individuals and organizations, including longtime City Council aide Don Mullen, party activist Phyllis McGrath and the Lambda Archives, a nonprofit dedicated to preserving and teaching the history of the LGBT community.
