Navy to Search for Munitions at Its Silver Strand Beaches

Personnel will search along the beaches south of the amphib base.

The Navy will conduct a three-week search at its two beaches along the Silver Strand to uncover any munitions that might have been left behind and undiscovered.

The Navy uses beaches south of the Naval Amphibious Base for training and said the search is being done “to determine the nature and extent of munitions at the sites.”

The beaches are closed to the public. Officials say they are coordinating with Caltrans and the city; there is a chance that public portions of the strand, including the Bayshore Bikeway or the state Route 75, could be briefly closed if a more extensive search is required.

The city notes that the project is routine and the not result of any concerns or reports about ordnance on the beach.

This is a great event. Thank you to all of the volunteers who helped make it a fun and enrichingRead More experience for my family. We need to get the word out about this helpful event in Coronado for the future. It was a learning experience for children and adults alike. I feel better now with my daughter riding her bike on the busy streets of Coronado. Thanks again to all of the Police Officers, Boy Scouts, Girls Scouts and local volunteers.
