Coronado City Council to Interview and Appoint Port Commissioner Tuesday

City Council will meet at 4 p.m., Tuesday in the City Hall Council Chambers to interview the five candidates for the Port Commissioner position and to appoint one to Represent the City of Coronado.

The appointed candidate serve a 4-year term on the San Diego Unified Port District Board of Commissioners. The term expires Jan. 2, 2018.

Admiral Lou Smith notified council last month that he would not seek reappointment as the city's representation on the Port District Board of Commissioners.

The candidates to be interviewed are Garry James Bonelli, Patricia Ann Yim Cowett, John Reeves Martin, Doug Metz and Garland P. Wright.

Rear Admiral Bonelli was a SEAL, ultimately lead Naval Special Warfare as a Force Commander, and is a retired SANDAG executive.

Cowett is a retired Superior Court judge and private mediator/arbitrator. 

Martin is an environmental engineering specialist for GD NASSCO. He works directly with the shipyard and naval facilities in San Diego.

Metz is president of Coronado-based Metz & Associates, a governmental, regulatory and legal consulting firm. He is active in many local and regional organizations, including the Coronado Rotary.

Wright retired from the Navy in 2012. He served as Deputy Commander for U.S. Third Fleet, Commander JTF-134 (Iraq), Deputy Commander for Navy Region Southwest, Deputy Chief for Navy Reserve (Pentagon) and Deputy Director of the Defense Threat Reduction Agency (Fort Belvoir.)
