Caltrans Reopens Turn Lanes on Silver Strang Highway

Editor's Note: City Manager Blair King released the following update on Friday, Feb. 21.

The California Department of Transportation has reopened a pocket turn lane from southbound Silver Strand Highway onto Leyte Road after appeals from Fire Chief Mike Blood, who was concerned about the impacts of the closure on emergency vehicles.

Caltrans is working on two projects involving work to the medians along State Route 75. The agency is replacing the median barriers, crash cushions and end treatments near the Navy housing along the Silver Strand State Highway.

Work crews had closed the left-turn pocket, leaving southbound motorists desiring to enter the Navy housing to detour past Leyte Road and turn around at the signals at the Loews entrance or the entrance to the Coronado Cays.

Caltrans also are cleaning the SR 75 medians, beginning at the southernmost end of SR 75, just north of Rainbow Drive in Imperial Beach.

Over a two-week period, crews will work their way north until they reach the median area just south of the Hotel del Coronado.
