Poll: Council Maintains Chicken Ban

Members rebuff resident's effort to change the law.

 

The City Council upheld Coronado’s longstanding ban against barnyard pets at its Tuesday meeting.

The consensus on the council was that lots in Coronado were too small and too close together to make a change. Smells and sounds from chicken coops and other enclosures could disturb neighbors, they decided.

Cities that allow backyard chickens require large setbacks, some up to 50 feet. The largest proposed setback for Coronado was 25 feet.

“We have to protect people who don’t want these critters next to them,” said Councilman Mike Woiwode. If the ban were to be lifted, “these people will lose the ability to control their environment.”

Only Councilwoman Barbara Denny supported the idea. She said the majority of people she had spoken with did not mind chickens being allowed. Councilwoman Carrie Downey was ambivalent, but in the end sided with her three colleagues who strongly opposed lifting the ban.
