It took San Diego firefighters about a half hour to put out a second-alarm, below-deck fire aboard the research vessel Dorado Discovery in the San Diego Bay, at 802 Terminal St., across from Coronado.
The fire started around 2:30 p.m. but was out by 3 p.m., according to a dispatcher.
The fire may have started in the engine room, a San Diego Fire-Rescue Department spokesman told the San Diego Union-Tribune.
According to a website called Odyssey Minerals, the Dorado Discovery is the first commercial purpose-converted research vessel to conduct deep-ocean mineral exploration. You can read all about the vessel's specifications here.
Oxygen containers may have exploded, but there were no injuries, the U-T reported.
