Police Find Credit Card Skimming Device Installed at this Coronado Business

Coronado Police said it was uncertain if the device installed at a pump at the 76 station captured credit card information before it was found.

An unknown suspect(s) recently installed a credit card skimming device at the 76 gas station on the corner of Orange Avenue and Ninth Street in Coronado.

Coronado Police said the device was installed over a three-day period between 10 p.m., Nov. 30 and 5:40 p.m., Dec. 2.

Skimmer devices can copy account data from the magnetic stripe on the back of credit and debit card when they are swiped for a transaction. Skimmers can also collect a PIN, if the user types that into the keypad. However, Coronado Police spokeswoman Lea Corbin said police were uncertain if the skimmer collected this information in Coronado.

On Tuesday, Corbin said police have yet to receive a report of unauthorized use of a debit or credit card associated with this incident. She said she expected reports to come in near the end of the month when account statements are typically sent out to customers.

If you purchased gas at the 76 station between these dates, please check your bank or credit card statement.
