A motorist who fled a traffic stop in the East Village led a police on a brief pursuit that ended after he crashed his car off Interstate 5 near the Coronado Bridge and made a failed attempt to escape on foot.
The driver sped off when a San Diego Community College police officer tried to pull him over near San Diego City College shortly before 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, authorities said.
The man, whose name was not immediately available, entered nearby I-5 and fled to the south for about a mile before the car he was in veered off the freeway near Cesar E. Chavez Parkway and smashed into a tree, San Diego police Detective Gary Hassen said.
The driver then jumped out and ran off into the Barrio Logan area. Officers took him into custody in the 1800 block of Logan Avenue less than five minutes later, Hassen said.
No injuries were reported.
