Man Shot on Bridge Identified

Man described as suicidal was killed by CHP early Sunday.

Authorities have identified a man who was fatally shot by California Highway Patrol officers on the Coronado Bridge early Sunday.

Passers-by spotted Rudy Ledbetter, 54, pacing in westbound traffic lanes before 1:30 a.m., according to the county Medical Examiner's Office.

When patrolmen reached him a few minutes later, Ledbetter told them he was going to jump, San Diego police homicide Lt. Ernie Herbert said. Ledbetter also claimed to have a gun and threatened to shoot if anyone tried to stop him, according to Herbert.

As officers tried to persuade Ledbetter to surrender, he allegedly put his hand into a pocket and quickly removed it, as if drawing a weapon. Three officers opened fire, killing him at the scene.
