Reis and Reeves, roommates in the condominium where the shootings occurred, were 25-year-old Navy lieutenants who piloted F/A-18s and trained at MCAS Miramar.

ABC News ran a segment on the investigation, and the Associated Press questioned whether jealousy could be the motive for the killings.

News outlets from across the country have been attracted to the case, not just because of the rarity of such a crime in a wealthy resort community like Coronado, but because those involved held such exclusive military posts and enjoyed wide networks of family and friends.

The Reis siblings – Karen was 24 – hailed from Bakersfield, where they will be buried Saturday, reported BakersfieldNow.com. Their family also has set up a scholarship fund in their honor at the school.

The Bakersfield Californian offered more insight into David and Karen Reis' close relationship and noted that they are survived by a brother and sister, both in their teens.

Fox5 San Diego reported on a vigil held by volleyball players at San Dieguito Academy in Encinitas to honor Karen Reis.

Saturley, 31, who lived in Chula Vista, was from Newbury, N.H, where his family, like the Reis clan, is dealing with dual losses, reports the Concord Monitor.

Saturley's father, Robert, 64, was killed in a June cycling accident. A cousin called the victim, an M.I.T. graduate, a “Pied Piper-type” who always had kids surrounding him. She said services for him would take place in New Hampshire.

Reeves was from Prince Frederick, MD. His family has remained mum, though friends from an online forum offered Wednesday.

An NBC-San Diego report also focused on stunned fellow members of the Navy, who not only are dealing with the loss, but the question of whether one pilot killed another, and if so, why.

A Sheriff's department captain said Wednesday it would be weeks before detectives have the results of forensic tests to offer a final ruling on who killed the victims.
